The compact city has become one of the well-known great challenges of today's urban life to answer the rising pressure on housing and services.
With higher densities of population in the city, the role of public space as bonding element, support of social life and urban flows is increasingly important. We expect public space to be safe, accessible, to bring together fluently the different users of the city and to fulfil all the technical requirements, such as the rainwater management and organisation of the underground. But we also want public space to be comfortable, beautiful and green.
With this publication, we intended to reflect on the question of public space in Amsterdam by presenting a panel of realisations from 2012 to 2017 as well as a series of articles elaborating on different aspects of the topic.
